As suggested by the title,
half of the solutions are homonyms of answers indicated by definitions within the clues. Untreated solutions, in clue order,
are:
CRUEL, LYNX, INVEIGHED, GUESSED,
DAGGER, MONICKER, HOLY, LIARS, SCALY, PASTE, PRESENCE, PHILIP, PEARL, WAVE, ASCENT, DISGUST, PLEASE, EYELET, WANTS.
Note: This
splendid puzzle's title "The Listener Crossword" refers, of course, to its use of homonyms in the completed grid, whilst
being a clever play on the name of the distinguished Listener series of crosswords. I should make it clear that
at no point has it been suggested that this puzzle appeared in that series, much though it may deserve to, and that should
anyone have formed that impression, it only goes to show that a good compiler can make fools of us all!
