Bits and Pieces
You’ve got to be very brave to name yourself after the one LOTR character that even aficionados find annoying and pointless! Fortunately Bombadil’s puzzle is neither annoying nor pointless – on the contrary, it is a masterclass in clueing technique. Bombadil, who hails from India, has produced a puzzle which, while not especially difficult, shows that care and attention pay off when writing clues. The excellent 1 across gets the puzzle off to a flying start, and particularly noteworthy are 14 across and 29 across. It makes all that “hey dol, merry dol” stuff worth it! (PDF version)
